Incredibly neat, thanks for the writeup! Curious, is all of this public information that is published somewhere? If so, what benefit does Google get from sharing this with the public? Not complaining, just wondering!

A lot of companies share information at the Hot Chips conference. All of the presentations should become public sometime in December. There's a lot of benefits to sharing info, like showing the public how advanced your stuff is. In some cases it can act as a bit of a recruiting pitch, because a lot of technical people attend that conference. Finally, sharing knowledge and experience is always a good thing.
