Ayar Labs at Supercomputing 2024: Making Light Move Bits (YouTube Short)
Hello you fine Internet folks,
Today’s content from Supercomputing 2024 is from Ayar Labs. Ayar Labs is known for co-packaged optical interconnects with their TeraPHY chiplet which converts the electrical signals from the silicon that the TeraPHY is attached to into optical signaling. That optical signal is then sent down a bundle of optical fibers to a second TeraPHY on a second piece of silicon which then decoded back into electrical signals.

At their SC24 booth, Ayar Labs was showing off their second generation of co-packaged optics which have the option of having the optical fibers being plugable into the TeraPHY chiplet instead of having the optical fibers being fused on to the chiplet itself.
The first type of plugable interconnect is from Intel Foundry and it is a lot like USB-C where you just plug in the optical fibers into the TeraPHY. This improves both packaging yields and field serviceability because the fibers aren’t fused to the TeraPHY.
The second type of detachable connector is from Teramount which while less serviceable compared to the Intel Foundry solution, does allow for more fibers in a smaller area which increases the bandwidth density.
Ayar Labs was also showing off their second generation of TeraPHY chiplet and SuperNova light source which doubles the bandwidth of their first generation chiplet and light source.
Hope y’all enjoy!
